Review

I really wanted to like the new movie from Kristoffer Borgli, The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. This movie came with a ton of fanfare and critical buzz from the very on trend studio A24.  The movie positions itself as a Dramatic-Comedy. I probably would have titled it The Mess or The Pretend Drama. It is very light on comedic effort. I can appreciate a well delivered dark romantic comedy, but this film missed that mark.

Actor Zendaya and Robert Pattinson

The subject matter and overall theme would have been better suited for a scripted television show on a premium cable network, like HBO's Euphoria comes to mind for some reason.

One hour and forty-six minutes of The Drama on the big screen was a bit too ambitious for the director, cast and crew. The movie felt chaotic at times. As the central plot unfolds and attempts to develop, there are many times where it gets disjointed and abruptly does the flash back thing repeatedly to try and establish context for the audience. It didn't work here. The plot gets sluggish, you lose interest or forget where the director was going and it just sort of feels very fragmented and they cannot piece it back together. A key point of notice for me is the mis-casting of not only the lead actor and actress but also the entire supporting cast. There is an overall of lack of chemistry with this group, thus the movie falls flat. There are a few bright spots and chuckles sprinkled in but unfortunately those are too few and far between to really hold the viewers attention.

Final Thoughts
